Local club seasons may be in full swing now, but the international football festival will kick off its 2024 programme. Qatar is preparing to host the AFC Asian Cup on January 12, while Ivory Coast is preparing to host the Africa Cup of Nations from January 13, 2024.

The West African country was first awarded the competition in 2021 but had to wait an extra three years to host AFCON. The 2024 matches will be played in six different stadiums in Cameroon, in places such as Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro and Yamoussukoro.

The tournament draw was held in October 2023 and the teams were divided into six exciting groups. The host country is in Group A along with Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.

Seeking redemption for its last defeat two years ago, Egypt will start its fight in Group B with Ghana, Cape Verde and Mozambique. Meanwhile, reigning champions Senegal will begin their title defense against five-time champions Cameroon, Guinea and Gambia in Group C.

Former Manchester City and Al-Ahli striker Riyad Mahrez is probably one of the most prominent players to join the squad. He will captain Algeria, which will face Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Angola in Group D.

In Group E, Tunisia was drawn with Mali, South Africa and Namibia and became one of the favorites of the tournament.

Morocco is still flying high with its historic World Cup success in Qatar as the first African team to reach the semi-finals. In Group F, Morocco will face the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Tanzania and will try to achieve their first tournament victory since 1976. Despite their solitary win, Atlas Lions are one of the favorites to lift the trophy this time.

African football podcast host and writer Maher Mahzi tells FOOTBALL NOW that they are a rapidly growing force in the world of football.

“They have a lot of strengths. But I think what makes this team great is the unity and harmony between the squad, the coach and the fans. They all push. Even at the federation level, no one has a better strength than that.” football infrastructure and rock on the continent. Aries is one of the youngest rising stars on the African continent, a leader and a great man. And then they all know how they want to play football.”

Many fans will watch AFCON due to the high participation of African star players. Talent on the field guarantees audiences for broadcasters in Africa and around the world. According to BeIn Sport, the AFCON 2019 final between Senegal and Egypt reached record numbers, with more than 90 million people watching the Middle East-based broadcaster.

The first African Cup of Nations tournament was held in 1957.

BBC football commentator Mark Scott has commented on three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments for the British channel and knows exactly what this means for the participating countries:

“I think the interest in England is definitely growing and that’s because there are so many Premier League stars joining now. And there’s a lot of good African talent flocking to England’s top teams. Just looking at the scenes from the last AFCON, not just in the host countries , but also in all African countries we see how much it dominates the landscape. It’s a huge deal. And I think you look at those teams: they’re on show and it’s very hard to call that.”

Egypt is the most successful team in the African Cup of Nations. The Pharaohs have a remarkable seven-time championship record, winning three consecutive tournaments from 2006 to 2010. First, all eyes will once again be on their legendary striker Mohamed Salah. He has achieved significant success since joining Liverpool in 2017. However, Salah, known as the ‘King of Egypt’, has not yet been able to win a major international trophy with Egypt.

Mo Salah is considered the best African football player of all time

“I think he carries the burden of Egypt firmly on his shoulders. He has the greatest will in the world, he is above many of his compatriots in terms of talent. He is one of the best players in the world. There is a lot of focus and attention on him going into a tournament.”

So there is pressure on all 24 participating countries. Will Senegal defend its title and lift the cup for the third time, or will we see a new team crown the African Cup of Nations? The tournament will take place between January 13 and February 11, 2024.
