As the FIFA U20 World Cup kicks off in Argentina this weekend, Europe’s best young footballers face off against the rest of the world.

Four cities in Argentina host 24 teams from May 20 to June 11, as the South American country is still celebrating Lionel Messi and his national team’s 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar.

Slovakia opened the score line for Europe by beating Fiji 4-0 on Saturday. Italy and Israel take action against Brazil and Colombia late Sunday evening; France and Britain begin their campaigns against South Korea and Tunisia, respectively, on Monday.

Argentina agreed to host the tournament at the last minute, to the relief of FIFA, after protests against hosting an Israeli team in Muslim-majority Indonesia forced a late nation change.

The absence of current U20 World Cup champions Ukraine this year makes England a favorite in Europe.

England were U20 champions in 2017 and brings the players who won the 2022 U19 European title.

Notable entries such as Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, Bristol City’s Alex Scott, Manchester City’s Liam Delap and Liverpool’s promising defender Jarell Quansah have strengthened the English squad.

Clubs have had to authorize their contract players to qualify for the Under-20 World Cup, and many talented players from Europe will not appear in the tournament as they are not allowed.

Facing rival Brazil in Group D, Italy will have the services of Empoli’s offensive midfielder Tommaso Baldanzi and Serie B club Cittadella’s Giuseppe Ambrosino despite restrictions.

France will have talented defender Tanguy Zoukrou and 20-year-old striker Alan Virginus and will be the favorites to leave Group F.

Led by Cagliari’s 193 cm tall striker Adam Griger, Slovakia will be in Group B, while Israel, who plays for the first time, will join Colombia, Japan and Senegal in Group C.

With young talents such as El Yam Kancepolsky and Ilay Madmon, Israel is led by coach Ofir Haim and is narrowly behind England in the European championships.

European teams have won the last four editions of the 23rd U-20 World Cup.

The youth tournament has been a vital platform for valued football players such as Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Paul Pogba in the early stages of their careers.
