Italy were eliminated from the Women’s World Cup after conceding a late goal against South Africa at Wellington on Wednesday.
Thembi Kgatlana scored a goal in the final minutes of the match that led South Africa to a stunning 3-2 victory. After that, they will face the Group E winner Netherlands on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Sweden beat Argentina to three wins. Rebecka Blomqvist and Elin Rubensson’s goals were enough for an exciting round of 16 against the USA.
In Group F, Jamaica defied luck to keep Brazil out of the competition. It was a skins event in Melbourne that ended in a goalless draw, enough to see Jamaica progress to the qualifying stage for the first time.
The result means that the South American side has failed to exit the group stage for the first time in 28 years.
Jamaica finished second in the group after France, who beat Panama 6-3 with a streak of Kadi Diani.
