There were two more gold medals up for grabs on day three of the World Judo Championships in Doha – and the local crowd enthusiastically applauded their heroes in competitions from around the world.
Canada’s 2019 World Champion Christa Deguchi was on top of her form and wouldn’t let anyone stand in the way of the -57kg final.
There, he would meet Japanese Haruka Funakubo, who also appears in typical form and throws ippons throughout the day.
However, using his style and experience, Deguchi took the final with instant magic and secured his second World Championship gold.
The medals were presented by Morinari Watanabe, Member of the IOC and President of the International Gymnastics Federation.
“I hope you trust yourself and I think if you trust yourself more than anyone else, you can do what you want to do,” Deguchi said.
Italian Manuel Lombardo had his eye on the gold medal in the -73kg and fought his way to the second majors world final.
But Nils Stump from Switzerland also put on some standout performances, leading the likes of Japanese Hashimoto to their first World final.
Lombardo thought he had won the championship on the gold score, but according to a reviewer, it was considered illegal head diving, which is prohibited in judo rules.

IJF EC Member and IOC Member Yasuhiro YAMASHITA presented the medals.
